- *Love on the Spectrum *star Abbey Romeo's mother and cousin, Christine and Mary Romeo, are opening up about Abbey's split from boyfriend David Isaacman.

- "There was no fight," Christine shared in a YouTube video, while Mary remarked that the former couple "ended up growing in in different directions."

- Abbey and David met on season 1 of the Netflix reality series, and dated for nearly five years.

Abbey Romeo and David Isaacman, one of *Love on the Spectrum*'s most beloved matches, are no longer together. Christine and Mary Romeo, Abbey's mother and cousin, are finally letting fans in on why.

The reasons for Abbey and David's split, which came as a shock to fans so used to seeing their natural chemistry across all four seasons of the hit Netflix dating series, were many. But according to Christine and Mary, none were particularly dramatic.

"Abby and David had a long relationship of four and a half years, the longest Abby [ever] had," Christine shared in a Saturday YouTube video in which they shared their thoughts on the recently dropped fourth season of *Love on the Spectrum*.

"Abbey has grown a ton since she started both social media and *Love on the Spectrum*. She started to understand her own story, see herself as a person with autism in the world, learn to accept her autism, and still try to have a relationship and fit in and all of these things," she continued. "None of the growth would have happened without David."

The reasons for Abbey and David's split after nearly five years were not clear when the news broke earlier this month. A source close to the couple told PEOPLE that the former couple "want different things and have decided to go their separate ways, but they remain friends wishing each other the best."

Christine and Mary confirmed the amicable nature of the split on Saturday, despite fans speculating it may have had more to do with Abbey's desire for marriage, which David didn't share. "I think they will have a forever bond," Christine said. "There was no fight over engagements and rings being thrown around. You know, Abby would say she wanted to get married, which really meant, 'I want to feel like a normal person in the world and do what they do in their relationships.'"

Mary, whom Christine described as Abbey's "aid" and "helper," remarked that "that they just kind of ended up growing in in different directions. That happens a lot, and for them, their love of lions is so pure, but I don't think it was maybe enough for what they needed in their next step of the relationship."

When reached for comment about the split, Isaacman told **, "I am grateful for our time together, but we were not ready for marriage. I wish Abbey the best."

Lions were indeed one of the "special interests," as Christine called them, that brought Abbey and David together on *Love on the Spectrum*.

She praised the series' producers as "so smart to get them together with their special interests, which was the glue to open up Abbey socially." She also revealed she was "terrified on their first date. I didn't even know if she was going to pay attention to David. Why? Because of her autism. That's how she is — her mind is flowing and going, but she was able to connect with him just even on that first date."

On that note, Christine left viewers with a bit of constructive perspective. "Please don't judge autistic relationships as if they were typical. So many people on the spectrum are not going to do what typical people do," she explained. "David was [just] happy with his way of doing life, and Abbey's was different."

Abbey and David appear together on the fourth season of *Love on the Spectrum*, which was filmed last summer.

An upcoming fifth season was announced earlier this month, along with core cast member Connor Tomlinson's exit. But neither Abbey nor David's participation in season 5 have been confirmed.
