The family of David Wilcock, a paranormal media personality, is speaking out after he died by suicide.

On April 20, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office responded to a call from Wilcock, prompting the office to dispatch two deputies, per a press release. “Within minutes of deputies' arrival," Wilcock died by suicide, the sheriff's office said.

Wilcock — a major figure in the disclosure movement, which believes the U.S. government holds secret information about UFOs and life beyond Earth and advocates for the supposed information to be declassified — had amassed hundreds of thousands of followers on YouTube and Facebook, known for sharing his claims in livestreams. He also authored multiple books, two of which were New York Times bestsellers.

Through an April 23 press release from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, Wilcock's family shared a statement remembering Wilcock, acknowledging that he had experienced “a long struggle with depression” and “overwhelming financial debt” during his life.

The statement shared that Wilcock grew up in Schenectady, N.Y., where he had an “imaginative inner life” and a “deep curiosity about telepathy, lucid dreaming, the occult, palmistry, and the predictions of Nostradamus.”

Wilcock attended the State University of New York at New Paltz, where he received a bachelor's degree in psychology, the statement continued. As an adult, he cultivated a community around several tenets that were important to him, including “the importance of focusing one's energies on service to others and the divinity of all human life.”

The family's statement also acknowledged the controversy surrounding many of Wilcock's claims, which were often not supported by the scientific community.

“In remembering David, it is important to hold more than one truth at once: that some of his work raised concerns about misinformation, and that he was also a person who was on an eternal quest for clarity,” wrote the family.

“Beyond his public persona, he was a human navigating the same complexities and vulnerabilities that shape all our lives,” the family continued. “His passing is a reminder of how important it is to meet one another with open minds and compassion in our hearts. The loss of a life can turn our focus to our shared humanity, whether we agree on life's unanswered questions or not.”
